A roof (pl.: roof coverings or rooves) is the top covering of a building, consisting of all materials and building and constructions essential to support it on the walls of the structure or on uprights, offering defense against rain, snow, sunshine, extremes of temperature, and wind. A roof is part of the structure envelope. In many nations, a roof covering secures mainly against rain. A verandah might be roofed with product that secures versus sunlight yet admits the other elements. The roofing of a garden sunroom protects plants from chilly, wind, and rainfall, yet confesses light. A roof covering may additionally supply extra living space, for example, a roof garden.
